EXCURSION PARENT HELPERS

As we have many excursions coming up we are calling for parent helpers to aid in supervising students on Friday MAY 10th.

We will ideally have 6 parent helpers - 3 for each excursion.

If you are available that day you can let any of the year one team know, comment on this post or email Hilary at green.hilary.g@edumail.vic.gov.au

Thank you for you support!

Excursions/ Incursions on May 10th

The year 1 neighbourhood will have a busy day on May the 10th! As part of our inquiry on play, we are organising three seperate experiences for students. Each experience revolves around the questions 'how do we learn/pass on games?', 'how do games change over time?' and 'what affects games/play?'.

One experience will be taking a bus to Wooranna Park where students will be able to learn and share games with the other students there.

There will be an incursion with Judy McKinty who is involved with the play and folklore collection at the Melbourne Museum. She will also be sharing historical Indigenous games.

The third experience will be to spend time with residents of Redman park retirement village. This will allows students to gain deep insight into how games have changed, stayed the same and have evolved over the years.

The best part is that students will be able to choose which experience best suits their interests.

Explain a Game!

As part of our inquiry on play, we are now looking at how we learn games and how to teach others games. All the students have been asked to bring in a game this week or think of a game they have made up or perhaps a game that not everybody knows. The purpose of bringing in the games is so that we can start a collection of their games and display them at school until we have a games day where the students can share playing the game with others. We don't want any games too valuable to be brought to school as they will be on display for two weeks.

The students have begun writing about their game in procedural form and will be using this to help them present their game to a group next week. If you would like to help your child prepare for their presentation, you may choose to practice explaining the rules of the game with them, using a big voice and eye contact.

Any questions about this please see any of the team.

Thank you,

Hilary, Shana, Tony and Mary

Regular Parent Helpers

On the time table above in red are where we need more parent helpers and how many we are aiming for. If you are at all interested to help at one or more of the times every week (if possible) we would love to speak to you.

We also are looking for green thumbs to help plant some seeds with a group on Wednesday from 2:30pm. You may also share your knowledge and passion about plants and gardening to our keen students.

Please let either Shana, Mary, Tony or Hilary know if you are available. We had such an amazing Learning Agreement time today with so many children supported by adults that we are hoping to repeat the experience as much as possible. Thank you so much to those parents for your support!

LIBRARY BORROWING!

The Library borrowing will now happen from 8.50 am to 9 am before class!

We want students to enjoy reading most of all. By borrowing at these times we want to encourage all students to borrow from the library as well as using the take home readers in the Junior school library.
Students should be borrowing a new library book at least once a week unless it is a chapter book.
Also keep in mind that loan periods are for 14 days only but children may renew a loan. Mark or Pat will be supervising the borrowing process.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to approach one of the year one team or comment on this blog post.

 Also...

Parent Helpers Needed for the main PHPS Library and the Junior School Library (old red brick building)

Can you spare 15 minutes once a week? We need helpers to organise, order and sort our library shelves to
keep them in good order for students to locate materials. 15 minutes a week makes all the difference!

Contact Mark Tuesdays and Wednesdays or let a Home Group Teacher know you are interested.

Thank you!

Tony, Shana, Mary and Hilary

Frequently asked questions:
What money should I send with my child?
There are items available for sale from $1.00 to $15.00 . Send the amount that works for your family

Can donated items be sent to school in advance?
Donations can be left at the office up until the day before the stall. If they can be delivered a day or too earlier helps so they can be priced and prepared for display.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Justine and Adrienne.

BOOK CLUB!

Ruben H Q had the bright idea of starting a book club this week - "because you can learn from reading books and when you talk to your friends you can find out about books that you might really love".

At the moment Book Club is happening in Learning Agreement time but will soon be an optional activity at lunch times for students to bring a book and share it with the group outside the library.
